Why I built it

I've loved music since I was 10, with my Walkman and its cassettes. I was a big fan of MTV back when it used to play music videos. Every stage of my life is strongly linked to the music I was listening to at the time, so I got very good at "guess the year" (of the song). It's actually part of VH1's daily broadcast, and I really enjoyed guessing the year of great songs that hold a special place in my memory. So now I've built this app.

How it works

Someone plays a song. You tap the record in the app, it listens, and it tells you the song's name and who sings it, so you can throw the question around your friends at the bar. You can also identify a song from an audio file, and every song you identify is saved in your history.

Guess mode

For a more structured game, switch on guess mode. Enter the number of players and their names: everyone gets 10 songs and one guess per song, taking turns. Each player scores points for every element they get right:

  • 15Song
  • 10Artist
  • 5Year

After each guess, the app reveals the answer, including the year the song was first released. At the end, the final results show who knows their music best.
